As a passionate sailor and survivalist, I have found post-apocalyptic movies to be a valuable tool for both entertainment and education. Your detailed ratings and links are a commendable effort to help us navigate this genre.

Your focus on realism resonates with me. Realistic portrayals of post-apocalyptic scenarios can give invaluable insights into potential survival strategies. In that vein, I'd recommend adding to your list a few movies that showcase survival at sea. For instance, "Waterworld," despite its fantastical elements, contains useful nuggets on improvisation and resource management in a water-based environment.

On another note, your mention of torrent programs reminded me of the importance of staying informed and connected in a survival scenario. In the event of a disaster, traditional communication channels might be compromised, making alternative methods like torrenting, radio communications or even maritime communication systems crucial. Perhaps a future article could delve into these unconventional communication methods for survivalists?

As someone who regularly drills with my family, I can't emphasize enough the value of learning through scenarios, even fictitious ones. Movies can provide a starting point for discussions and practice drills, helping us prepare for the unpredictable.

Finally, I'd like to toast to your color-coded rating system - a true reflection of a survivalist's pragmatism. It's a practical and visual way to quickly assess the value of the movies.

Keep up the good work! Your effort in curating this list will undoubtedly prepare many for the choppy waters of the future.

As a seasoned prepper and a liveaboard sailor, I appreciate the practical viewpoint presented in this article on post-apocalyptic entertainment. Your approach of preferring realistic scenarios aligns with my belief that preparation comes from understanding potential real-world situations, not fictitious creatures and scenarios.

I'd like to add a perspective from the sea to this discussion. In many post-apocalyptic movies, the ocean is often overlooked as a survival space. The idea of bugging out on a boat isn't commonplace, but it provides a unique perspective on survival and self-sufficiency. I'd love to see more movies exploring this concept.

Also, as a sailor, I have a few movie recommendations that might fit your criteria for realism and entertain those interested in the nautical lifestyle. 'All is Lost' and 'The Mercy' are two films that depict man against the elements in a very real and poignant way, even though they are not strictly post-apocalyptic.

Finally, having weathered a severe storm that left us without power for a week, I can say that movies depicting survival scenarios can provide valuable food for thought. They can stimulate conversation and planning within families, making them more prepared for potential future crises.

Keep up the good work on your list. It's clear you've put a lot of effort into it. I'm looking forward to seeing it evolve and grow.

I'd like to respond to your comment about there being few post-apocalyptic films where they take to the sea.
First, I agree. I think the only one is Waterworld. But there is a reason for that... it would be a boring film. Once the family has escaped on their boat, the film is basically over. You have escaped all the post-apocalyptic danger. Sure, there's still danger from storms and such, but that's not post-apocalyptic. The post-apocalyptic dangers all disappear once you sail away. There would be no roving gangs, no zombies, no desperate search for food and water (simply catch the rain or drop fishing lines while you sail).
Without the danger, without the action, it just becomes one person/family going sailing.

The Captain has spoken! :-)

This is a very in-depth and comprehensive list, Emily Harper, or should I say 'SurvivalSailor', here. As a fellow survivalist, I find your approach to post-apocalyptic entertainment refreshing and realistic. I agree, the best films are those that accurately depict potential future scenarios, and zombies aren't exactly on my list of probable threats.

I noticed you mentioned qBittorrent as your recommended torrent program. As a sailor who's prepping for SHTF situations, I'd suggest considering offline options for preserving important information or entertainment. Physical media, like DVDs, or even hard drives with downloaded content can be invaluable when the internet is no longer accessible.

I also appreciate your focus on the realism of these movies. As an experienced prepper, I'd love if you could delve into this a little more in future articles. For instance, a deeper analysis of the survival techniques used in the films, their practicality, and how they could be incorporated into our own planning could be incredibly beneficial.

Finally, as a quick suggestion, have you considered including a segment on nautical-themed post-apocalyptic movies? Given your love for the sea (which I share!) and your unique escape plan, I think it would be fascinating to read your thoughts on how these films portray survival on the open water.

Keep up the excellent work. Your practical insights and no-nonsense approach are greatly appreciated in the prepping community.
